Features

What happens from picking a song to the final rank, and what you set up once beforehand.

How a night goes

  1. 1. Start a night

Open AetherStar and the menu is already playing something from your library. The line under the buttons tells you how many mics are ready before anyone picks one up.

  2. 2. Pick a song

Browse by cover, jump by letter, filter for duets or a language, or hit Random. Each song shows its length and the highscore to beat.

  3. 3. Choose who's singing

Tap players in order and they take mic 1, mic 2 and so on. Each singer sets their own difficulty, so a nervous first-timer and a show-off can share a song.

  4. 4. Sing

A short countdown, then the song. Notes arrive one line at a time with a playhead sweeping across, the lyrics fill as you go, and every line gets its verdict the moment it ends.

How scoring works

Every singer is scored against the part they actually sang. A duet partner with half the lines can still reach 10,000.

9,000 for notes 1,000 for lines

Notes share 9,000 points by length, so a long held note is worth more than a quick one. Golden notes count double. There is no combo multiplier, so one bad line never wipes out a good verse.

Lines share the other 1,000. When a line ends it gets a verdict on the share of its notes you hit: Perfect from 95%, Great from 80%, Good from 60%, OK from 40%.

Difficulty

Difficulty is per singer. It sets how close you have to be to the written note. Any octave counts, so a low voice can sing a high song.

Game modes

Party

Nobody has to volunteer. AetherStar draws tonight's singers, least-sung first, and deals three mystery songs. Pass the mic to someone on the bench and it deals again.

Versus

A duel. Two singers, one song, and a tug-of-war bar over the video that shows who's ahead as it happens.

Solo and Duet

Sing on your own, or split a duet. Each part goes to its own singer and each singer is scored on their own part.

Second screen

Turn on Second screen and AetherStar opens an audience window on another monitor or the TV, with the lyrics, the notes and a live scoreboard. The laptop keeps the menus, so nobody has to watch you scroll.

Between songs, Jukebox plays your library with its videos and a queue anyone can add to.

Setup

Mics

Eight mic slots. Each one can be a USB mic or one channel of an audio interface. Sing into a mic and its level bar moves, so you know which is which. Mic check shows a live tuner for every input.

Timing

A short calibration measures your speaker and mic delay, so Bluetooth speakers don't cost anyone points. Every song plays at about the same volume, and there's a mixer for the rest.

Controls

Keyboard, mouse or gamepad, everywhere in the app. Menus come in English and German, and a new language is one text file.
